The National Association for AONBs is grateful to the following organisations for their support of Landscapes for Life Conference 2014:
National Grid is pleased to be principal sponsor of Landscapes for Life Conference 2014 and will use it as an opportunity to promote its Visual Impact Provision project, a major initiative to reduce the visual impact of transmission lines in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and National Parks.
Leading environmentalist and independent chair of National Grid’s Stakeholder Advisory Group, Chris Baines will deliver a keynote speech detailing the project which has been developed in response to the £500 million allowance made available by Ofgem in March 2013, which applies to all electricity transmission owners across Great Britain.
In his role as chair of the Stakeholder Advisory Group, Baines is working alongside the National Association for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and organisations including the Campaign for National Parks, Campaign to Protect Rural England, Campaign to Protect Rural Wales, and the National Trust.
Together with some of the UK’s leading landscape consultants, the Stakeholder Advisory Group’s members will identify potential projects – both large and small – that can deliver the greatest visual mitigation of existing transmission lines.
More information about the Visual Impact Provision project can be found at:
Allerdale Borough Council
Allerdale Borough Council is pleased to be sponsoring Landscapes for Life Conference 2014 at Newton Rigg Agricultural College this July. In the Solway Coast AONB, we help to manage one of the most stunning areas of landscape in the UK, and arguably one of the most significant in terms of its history and habitats.
To be welcoming the annual conference to Cumbria in the 50th anniversary year of the Solway Coast AONB offers a great opportunity to showcase the area, and all of its attractions, to a wider audience as part of the accompanying programme of activities.
Eden District Council
Eden District Council is pleased to be sponsoring Landscapes for Life Conference 2014.
Eden comprises Lake Ullswater, the Eden valley, Alston and the North Pennines. It is a diverse area of stunning landscapes from the mountains surrounding the lake to the pretty villages dotted throughout the Eden valley and along the River Eden to the rugged beauty of the Pennies. The visitor can enjoy a range of activities, great hospitality and amazing local food. Eden has many fine local producers and menus offer local meat, cheeses and bread plus a brewery or two and even a winery located in the Pennines. Cycling and walking are the main activities with many local and long distant routes and walks, but not forgetting the water based activities plus some history and heritage. We look forward to welcoming you to Eden.

He has completed a series of AONB governance reviews, management strategy reviews, Strategic Environmental Assessments, Sustainability Appraisals and Habitat Regulation Assessments in both England and Wales. Other work in England has focused on design guides for protected landscapes. In Northern Ireland, he has devised and run public engagement exercises as a part of the development of the first management plans for their AONBs and completed a critical review of the Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site Management Plan. Work in Scotland has included support for the creation of the Loch Lomond National Park and a study into the boundary and governance needs of the National Scenic Areas associated with Ben Nevis and Glen Coe.
